Graduate of Accredited Dental Specialty Program


Dental specialists must complete the following to be eligible to become registered and licensed with MDA:
a) An accredited Dental Specialty program
b) Holds a NDSE Certificate or certificate of fellowship from the Royal College of Dentists of Canada demonstrating successful completion for the applicable dental specialty
c) A Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) program
d) An approved Jurisprudence and Ethics program

a) Accredited Dental Specialty Programs

Visit Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC) for a list of accredited dental specialty programs in Canada.

Visit the American Dental Association for a list of dental specialty programs accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of America (CODA). Canada recognizes these programs as accredited.

If your education program is not accredited, complete the registration and licensing process outlined in Dental Specialist: Graduate of Non-Accredited Dental Specialty Program.

b) National Dental Specialty Examination (NDSE)

Upon completion of an accredited dental specialty program, you must complete the NDSE. The Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC) administers the NDSE in these dental specialties:

  • Dental Public Health
  • Endodontics
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology
  • Oral Medicine and/or Oral Pathology
  • Orthodontics
  • Pediatric Dentistry
  • Periodontics
  • Prosthodontics

c) Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Programs

You must have valid certification in resuscitation from one of these programs approved by Manitoba Health:

Emergency Rescue Response Service

Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba

St. John Ambulance

d) Jurisprudence and Ethics Programs

You must complete a Jurisprudence and Ethics Program with one of the following MDA-approved institutions:

McGill University, Montreal
University of British Columbia, Vancouver
University of Manitoba, Winnipeg
University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon
University of Toronto, Toronto
University of Western Ontario, London
University of Alberta, Edmonton
Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario
University of Montreal, Montreal
