Welcome to the Manitoba Dental Association website.
The Manitoba Dental Association is in its 127th year as the regulatory and
membership services body for dentists in Manitoba. However, there will be changes forthcoming to our dual core mandate as a result of the Health Regulated Professions Act of Manitoba. For the general public this means that there will be a clear separation between the regulatory activities and professional activities.
The regulatory body of dentists will be called The College of Dentists of Manitoba. The professional or membership services body will retain the name The Manitoba Dental Association. As a regulator, The College, will be responsible for licensing and regulating dentists and dental assistants and the protection of the public. The Manitoba Dental Association, as a professional and membership services body will provide services that will be of benefit to both dentists and the public.
Today, Manitoba dentists are involved in a variety of initiatives that impact positively to the underserved population. First and foremost we have provided bridge funding for a period of one year to the Community Centre for Oral Health to maintain the dental services provided to the residents at St. Amant Centre, the Manitoba Development Centre and the working poor at Downtown Access Dental Clinic. Secondly, participating Manitoba dentists are providing a free first visit for all children under the age of three.
During the Free First Visit, the dentist and his oral health team will examine the child’s mouth and assess their oral health; recommend treatment if necessary to address tooth decay or cavities; inform and educate parents on their role in maintaining good oral health of their child; introduce dentistry to a child in a pleasant and non-threatening manner and establish an on-going relationship with your dentist.
The key benefits of the program include the opportunity for the dentist to assess the oral health of the child and detect dental decay at an early stage, intercept behavior that is potentially damaging to the child’s oral health and provide parents with valuable information about prevention.
